Still Lives

In my search for what I call “emotional realism”, I turned to still life—not to replicate reality, but to transcend its surface, introducing an inner movement that breaks the traditional stillness of the genre. My intent is to evoke metaphysical atmospheres, guiding the viewer beyond the image’s appearance and into a deeper, more contemplative dimension. In an era dominated by speed, distraction, and visual saturation, I feel an urgent need to restore value to slowness, silence, and the intimate act of observation. Through light, objects begin to reveal an inner life—a presence often overlooked. Inspiration arises from small, quiet moments: a shadow, a reflection, a fleeting tension in space. These humble details, when closely observed, open a path to the poetic. While I remain in dialogue with the classical tradition, my focus is not on formal perfection. Rather, I seek to question the illusion of stillness in reality, allowing emotion, mystery, and ambiguity to emerge. The technical challenges—reflections, transparencies, textures—are not ends in themselves, but instruments for accessing a symbolic, inner realm. I’ve chosen a visual language that whispers. Light becomes the silent protagonist, and painting transforms into a subtle narrative of the soul. My still lifes speak of waiting, of unseen presences, of a fragile and silent beauty. Common objects become metaphysical signs—vessels of hidden memory and emotion. In this way, my work offers a quiet invitation: to pause, to look again, and perhaps, to find oneself in the stillness.

Few reviews of the “Still Lives” project

Terdich’s painting rises to the rank of masterpiece within the realm of hyperrealism, placing each of his works among the finest creative expressions in the genre. What characterises and distinguishes every piece by Paolo Terdich is his ability to move beyond sheer technical mastery. In every brushstroke, the painter infuses a tension that compels us to look beyond the visible, guiding us into the realm of emotion — a unique and extraordinary experience.” (A. Moioli)

“Original in his interpretation of light and in his choice of subjects, Terdich’s still lifes — rendered with extraordinary realism — transform into metaphysical presences, emblems of inner states of mind, thanks to a pure, sculptural light. Within this metaphysical dimension, one senses, subtle and intangible, the breath of the great painter Giorgio Morandi. His work might be defined as a form of inquiry, conveyed through a silent, intimate realism that evokes sensations of expectation and mystery, through which a profound inner torment quietly emerges.” (F. Bianchi)
