Ossessione
In an age dominated by speed and spectacle, painting for me is a radical act: an invitation to slowness, to depth of gaze, and to care. My work arises from the desire to strip images of superficiality, restoring their depth, memory, and capacity for reflection. Each portrait poses an open question about the present, suspended between personal experience and collective tension. A pivotal influence is the noir aesthetic of Sin City, whose stark contrasts, dramatic lighting, and narrative framing deeply inform my pictorial vision. Yet, this is no mere formal homage—I reimagine its visual language to probe, with intimacy and surrealism, the complexity of human identity. My paintings stage a coexistence of opposites: violence and tenderness, darkness and revelation, dream and reality. Details—a hand brushing lightly, an interrupted gaze—become symbolic fragments that tell stories beyond the surface. The canvas becomes a space of suspension, like a still frame from a film noir, where the action pauses but the energy lingers. This investigation draws on art history, cinema, and lived experience—travel, listening, observation. Each work stands at the threshold between visible and invisible, where light and shadow merge to shape deep, contradictory emotions. It is in this restless, poetic ambiguity that I invite the viewer to recognize themselves, to reflect, and to linger.
A review of the “Ossessione” project
“In his solo “Luci e Contrasti”, Paolo Terdich masterfully explores light and contrast across three themes: still lifes, portraits, and figures immersed in water. His work unfolds within an intimate, surreal atmosphere, where figurative passion drives an expressive language aimed at transcending mere representation. Through impeccable realism reminiscent of late 20th-century Anglo-American Hyperrealism, Terdich achieves a flawless mimetic precision. However, his paintings reveal deeper layers—subtle restlessness and questioning emerge in the fine details, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface. Terdich’s rigorous technique combines disciplined brushwork with meticulous, photo-luministic attention to light’s interplay on objects, elevating them into a dreamlike, mythical realm. This sophisticated approach merges the tangible with metaphor, weaving reality with myth and reverie. The exhibition includes a recent project inspired by Sin City extends this vision, reimagining the film’s noir atmosphere through a personal, surreal lens. By blending stark contrasts with dreamlike qualities, Terdich creates a narrative that blurs the boundaries between light and shadow, reality and imagination. His works offer an immersive experience where the visible becomes a portal to the invisible, articulated with elegance, rigor, and haunting lyricism.” (Patrizia Mazzei)
